Cayo Belize Jungle Lodges

Cayo is usally the first jungle area most travelers visit in Belize.  As shown on the map to the left, it's easily accessible from Belize City and offers a wide variety of lodging, including several of Belize's best jungle lodges. 

Lodging in Cayo spans the spectrum from upscale/luxury to camping, with everything in between.  And, most jungle lodges in Cayo are located adjacent to a river, providing guests with opportunties for jungle river swimming, canoeing, kayaking or tubing.

However, while swimming in a clear, cool jungle river can be an intoxicating experience (especially when waterfalls are involved), man-made swimming pools are becoming more common in Cayo.

Most jungle lodges in Cayo are also off the grid and must manufacture their own electricity, so very few have a/c.  But, believe it or not, nights in the jungle get quite cool, especially in the Mountain Pine Ridge area of Belize where rooms have fireplaces.

The most popular jungle activities in Cayo include cave tubing, zip lining, Mayan ruins and jungle waterfalls, and all are accessible from all jungle lodges in Cayo, although the Mountain Pine Ridge area of Cayo offers more convenient access to the Caracol Mayan ruins and jungle waterfalls.

Toledo Hotels and Jungle Lodges

Toledo includes lodging in the deep southern jungle -- but also hotels with amazing seaviews.  However, the jungle is not very far from the sea here, and Toledo has no beaches, so we've included all Toledo hotels and lodges under the category of jungle lodges.

Toledo's hotels and lodges are almost all small and owner operated - one of the best things about venturing into Toledo, Belize's southernmost district, and least visited area in the country. 

Toledo hoteliers really enjoy welcoming travelers -- often making lifelong friends of their guests -- and travelers can be sure they'll be well taken care of - directed toward the best tours, the most honest vendors, given good advice on independent exploring -- anything necessary to make sure guests have a memorable Toledo experience.

Lodging in Orange Walk

The Orange Walk District is well known for its Mayan ruins and abundance of wildlife, particularly birds.

However, full-service jungle lodge choices in this District are limited to Chan Chich Lodge on the western border of Belize and Guatemala, Lamanai Outpost Lodge, near the Lamanai Maya ruins and La Milpa, located in the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area, and also near the Lamanai ruins and the La Milpa Mayan ruins.

Wildlife and birding are the focus of activties at all three lodges, but Chan Chich and La Milpa activities center around birding and jungle hiking, and, at Chan Chich, jungle horseback riding and vehicle expeditions in addition to hiking.  Lamanai Outpost Lodge offers the widest range of activities, including air boat tours, night-time crocodile spotting, a sunset cocktail cruise and native fishing expeditions.  All three offer excellent birding and wildlife tours.  The Lamanai and La Milpa Mayan ruins are easily accessible from Lamanai Outpost Lodge and La Milpa, but not from Chan Chich.
